Souls: not merely human, but in a variety precious to Our Creator

Took Ginger for a slow walk along the river today. An hour, a mile, with plenty of stops. She was happy, and at the end, tuckered out. Now, resting in her bed at home. Treats. Cuddles.

She’s had a couple tough weeks, coughing fits and whines especially at night, heart racing, even with her meds doubled.

Talked with our vet, who has been great — but says it is time; only getting worse for our pup.

So, we drive to the vet tomorrow to say goodbye.

A sad bookends kind week of innocents leaving our lives.

My sister, for whom I daily prayer an akathist for the departed, and now our little fur-friend, who has nestled between my feet to sleep for the past 11 years.

Orthodox saints long ago declared souls are not merely human, but in variety precious and treasured by Our Creator.

How that works out, I don’t know … but I find it comforting, and it feels true.

So, I trust, in what little I know through experience and my limited understanding, and in the mystery of the Eternal’s Love.

*** 10:27am today, peaceful and with the light in her eyes, fixed on my own, fading and then gone. In ways I cannot express, it was a gentle and somehow sacred moment.
